The stinky fish right?

Sardines, delicious canned cuisine, have gained the reputation of being the stinky fish that should only be fed to cats. Being a strong believer in the practice of giving everyone and everything a chance I am here to redeem the smelly sea creature. If the odor of fish by itself is just to overpowering for you to eat alone try one of these delicious ways to eat sardines!

Sardines can be delicious!

Method #1

One the simplest ways to eat sardines and my go to method is on a saltine cracker. Nothing beats the combination of the salty cracker with the tangy fish. If that's to boring for you though I suggest trying it with some peanut butter on the cracker. While it may sound strange it is actually a fabulous combination worth giving a try.

Method # 2

Bread and Tomato Salad- Recipe courtesy of Eating Healthy Magazine

  • 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 3 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 small clove garlic, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • Freshly ground pepper, to taste
  • 4 cups diced seeded tomatoes
  • 2 cups cubed whole-wheat country bread,
  • 1/4 cup thinly slivered red onion
  • 3 tablespoons chopped fresh basil
  • 4-1/2-ounce cans sardines

Whisk oil, lemon juice, garlic, salt and pepper in a large bowl. Add tomatoes, bread, onion, basil and sardines. Toss to combine. Let the salad sit for about 5 minutes to allow it to absorb the dressing's flavors, stirring occasionally. Serve at room temperature.

Delicious and so easy!

Method # 3

Sardines and Rye

  • Sardines
  • Rye/ Whole Wheat Bread
  • Lemon Juice
  • Diced tomatoes, cucumber, and onion

Toast the bread till light brown, then mix sardines with tomatoes, cucumber, and onion into paste. Spread paste over bread and squirt lemon juice on top. Enjoy!

Not only yummy but healthy too!

If your mouth isn't already watering for the idea of creating some of those recipes the benefits to your health will win you over.

Did you know that sardines are incredibly rich in Omega- 3 fatty acids and can help prevent cardiovascular disease? Well they are! And when they say fish are brain foods they mean it! Studies have shown that consuming Omega- 3 fatty acids on a regular basis and help prevent the development of Alzheimer's disease.

But don't be afraid of getting mercury poisoning from these oily fish. Sardines are so low on the food chain that problems that occur in more popular fish like salmon are rare in sardines.

So with health benefits galore and the ability to buy them year round at nearly any grocery store why aren't you trying sardines!
